Starting from 1 January 2021 a new way of online card payment confirmation with additional authentication came into effect.
As we informed earlier, the new system is introduced to increase the safety of card payments – in accordance with the provisions of European Directive PSD2 (Payment Service Directive 2).
An additional authentication is an obligation to all online payments for merchants registered in the European Economic Area (EEA).
However, please be noticed that not all of EEA registered merchants have implemented the new system yet. Therefore, payments to those European online stores which are not able to provide an additional authentication, at the moment can be declined.
You can check whether the store uses an additional authentication before making a payment. Verified by Visa / MasterCard logo on the store web page proves it has implemented the new requirements.
