The National Museum of Art in Riga is housing an exhibition from 9 September to 23 October, featuring the work of Gleb Panteleev, one of the leading modern sculptors in Latvia.
With the support of Rietumu Bank’s Charity Fund, one of the exhibits, the sculpture of Icarus, has been donated by the artist to the National Museum of Art. During his artist’s career, Panteleev has participated in numerous exhibitions both in Latvia and abroad. His solo exhibitions are annually shown in private galleries in Latvia and Europe. His works are in the collections of the National Museum of Art, Latvian War Museum and the Latvian National Opera.
Gleb Panteleev is the creator of a number of monumental sculptures and public artworks in Riga, including monuments to Oscars Kalpaks
(Oskars Kalpaks), the first commander-in-chief of the Latvian Army, and Krishyanis Valdemars
(Krišjānis Valdemārs), a writer and the leader of
The Young Latvians movement, a memorial at the former building of the Committee for State Security
(KGB) of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic and memorials
The Bridge and the Eternity in Jurmala
(Jūrmala), and
The Strings of Wind clock at the
Dzintari Concert Hall, among others.
The name of the current exhibition is
Ornithology. It plays on the association with the image of a bird and is perceived as a sense object showing the artist’s interest in this symbol, its context and its history. The ‘bird-air-sky’ relationship, as contained in the artist’s message, turns into the ‘air-substance’ relationship, which inevitably develops into the existential dilemma of ‘spiritual and material’.
Rietumu Bank’s Charity Fund has rendered financial support for this exhibition. This is not the first time the Bank has cooperated with Gleb Panteleev: the artist is also the author of the famous clock at the
Dzintari Concert Hall in Jurmala.
