“Rietumu Bank Latvian FIM Speedway Grand Prix” competitions will be held in Daugavpils stadium recognized as one of the best speedway track in Europe. European and global competitions are held here historically for many years. These competitions gather numerous fans and guests from Latvia, neighboring countries, the EU and the CIS member states.
18 sportsmen from Denmark, Great Britain, the USA, Poland, Latvia, Sweden, Australia and other countries will take part in these competitions.
According to the experts and sports journalists the current world champion, American Greg Hancock, who accounts for three victories in Daugavpils in prior years, is the race favorite. Latvia will be represented by Kjastas Puodzhuks who has the best results among national speedway racers and young sportsmen Andzejs Lebedevs and Jevgenijs Kostigovs.
Krzysztof Kasprzak, Nicki Pedersen and Greg Hancock became the winners in the last year World Speedway Championship.
Many sports including speedway are being developing in Latvia at the serious international level today and our sportsmen honorably represent the country at the European and international competitions. And due to holding of these competitions in Latvia our foreign guests are able to get to know our country better, and not only its capital, but also such a beautiful and original region as Latgalia, which capital Daugavpils is, - Inga Sina, the Chairman of the Board of Charitable Foundation of Rietumu Bank, says.
Daugavpils is the recognized speedway capital of Latvia and the Baltic states. We are sure that this time the competitions will be held at high level and gather thousands of fans. Development of the second center of speedway in Riga where we have opened the training school for juniors is important for us. Administration and management of Daugavpils with the Latvian Federation of Motor Racing prepared a special program for the fans and experts of technical sports to be held during the competitions.
Speedway in Latvia has been actively developing since XX century. In the past
25 years international competitions in this sport were held in Lokomotiv stadium in Daugavpils where Latvian speedway team is also training. Since last year, speedway has received a new impetus for development in Latvia’s capital Riga, where a training base for young athletes and competitions has been established.
