“Woyzeck” by Buchner has been staged in Riga by Kirill Serebrennikov, who is the Art Director of the Gogol Centre in Moscow and a recognised Russian theatre and film director. At present, he has a reputation of being one of the brightest, biggest and most advanced stage directors in Russia.
The second performance is staged by a young director from Riga Vladislav Nastavshev, who has studied and staged performances in Latvia, Great Britain and Russia during his artistic career. Apart from “The Old Woman”, Moscow spectators may have seen performances of his such as “Mitya’s Love”, “Fear” and “Medea” at the Gogol Centre.
A press conference dedicated to the guest tour of the Latvian theatre was held in Moscow with the participation of directors and actors, the Head of the Latvian National Theatre Ojars Rubenis, the Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia in the Russian Federation Astra Kurme, the Vice-president of Rietumu Bank Petr Gladkov. Participants of the press conference emphasised the great importance of cultural cooperation between Latvia and Russia and its special connective role in the relations of our countries. Kirill Serebrennikov expressed confidence that spectators of the Russian capital city were pleased and interested to see the art presented to them by the best masters of Latvian theatre.
As Rietumu Bank spokesperson Petr Gladkov noted, the position of the bank is to help the best of that which is available in the world – the development of culture, friendship and strengthening of normal human communication between intelligent people. “We strive to follow this rule to the best of our ability. Last year Rietumu Bank brought Latvian National Opera to Russia and this year it presented drama theatre to the public of Moscow. We have also arranged several art and photo exhibitions in different cities of Russia, and in the future we intend to further strengthen and support the cultural exchange between our countries. Latvian culture and art have achieved considerable heights, being a young and strong trend in modern aesthetics,” said Petr Gladkov.
Along with the guest tour of the Latvian National Theatre, an exhibition of works of the Latvian politician and photo artist Janis Krumins “My Latvia” is being held at the Gogol Centre. The author of the works is a unique person. Being a personal friend of politicians and big entrepreneurs, Mr Krumins is an influential figure in the artistic, political and business elite of his country. The exhibition “My Latvia” has also been organised with the support of Rietumu Bank.
This autumn the Gogol Centre will come to Riga with its guest tour.
