The programme has been prepared by the Embassy of Latvia in Georgia with the support of Rietumu Bank.

Within the framework of the programme, a concert of the State Academic Chorus “Latvia” will take place in the Grand Hall of the Tbilisi Conservatoire on 25 September. It will be visited by the Minister of Culture of Georgia Mikheil Giorgadze, members of the diplomatic corps, eminent people of art, representatives of cultural circles and entrepreneurs, including Georgian partners of Latvian companies. After the concert a ceremonial reception will be held.

“This year is special for Latvia and particularly for the Latvian capital city and its residents, as Riga is the 2014 European Capital of Culture. To provide an opportunity to get familiar with a slice of Latvian culture and its cultural and historical heritage for people in other countries, it was decided to hold a programme of Latvian cultural events in Georgia,” says Elita Gavele, Ambassador of Latvia in Georgia.

“Links between Latvia and Georgia are becoming increasingly more multiform and diversified, covering the social and public area, as well as the humanitarian dimension, business and culture. On these days a premiere of “Khanuma” by the Georgian classic Tsagareli will be shown at the Russian Drama Theatre in Riga. We have increasingly more projects with every coming year. They bring us closer, both benefitting the present, and creating good potential for the future,” noted the Member of the Council of Rietumu Bank Alexander Gafin.

This year the Latvian Society in Georgia (named Ave Sol) celebrates its 20 th anniversary. In honour of this jubilee, on 26 September a gala night will be held in the Tbilisi House of Writers, in which ministers of culture of the two countries and other distinguished guests will take part.

Within the framework of the programme of Latvian Culture Days in Georgia, on 24 September the exhibition “Julijs Straume – 140” will be open. The exhibition is a joint project of the Embassy of Latvia in Georgia and the Museum of Applied Arts of Georgia.

Julijs Straume is an outstanding master of artistic textiles born in Latvia, whose art at certain stages was tightly linked with Georgia, where he worked a lot and established his school during the years of the revolution. In the 1920s the painter returned to Latvia and became one of the founders of the textile art school.
